News from St Mary’s – Fourth Sunday of Easter

Welcome to the latest news from St Mary’s, which launches our new video service for Sunday mornings.

Spiritual resources for adults

A new video service will be available on our YouTube playlist of services this Sunday. It’s led by the Rector, Alec, and includes music from our Director of Music, Alan, and a short talk from the Archdeacon of Hertford, Janet. All the words you will need to join in with this service of Morning Prayer are in the video itself, and to pray along you can also download an order of service to view in your browser or print, either as single A4 sheets or an A5 booklet.

Most days, morning or evening prayer is also available as an audio service on our Soundcloud playlist. If you’d like to contribute to future video services or lead an audio service on behalf of the St Mary’s community, please contact the parish office

The Church of England has is also making music, prayers, services and sermons available 24/7 through its new Daily Hope telephone line: 0800 804 8044. Please let anyone without an internet connection know about this provision.

From 5 pm on Saturday you will be able to hear hear David Suchet give the readings recommended for this Sunday, and you can read a reflection from Jenny, our Assistant priest, inspired by the Gospel. The Good Shepherd is probably the earliest way in which Jesus was portrayed in art and Handel explored this theme in He shall feed his flock from The Messiah

Coffee without a rota: if you would like to join a weekly “after service coffee” online at 10:30 to catch up with your friends from St Mary’s please contact the parish office for an invitation to Zoom. You can dial into the meeting on a normal home telephone, or join on a computer or smartphone.

Spiritual resources for children and young people

Alec has prepared a Collective Worship service for family use, inspired by this Sunday’s Gospel. You can also enjoy a Godly play retelling of the story on YouTube and do some colouring sheets, a maze and dot to dots on the same theme.

Sunday Club: you can join our Sunday Club online at 11:30 each Sunday morning. If you would like to join your friends from St Mary’s please contact the parish office for an invitation to Zoom.

Little Tots: you can also join Little Tots online at 10am each Thursday morning. If you would like to catch up with other parents of young children, and listen to a story, please contact the parish office for an invitation to Zoom.

Stewardship and Giving

Many thanks for your generosity to St Mary’s, especially at this worrying time. For more information about the best ways to make donations to support to the work of the church in the community, please contact Heather Melling in confidence on 020 8449 2283.

If you need help, or can offer any help of a practical nature, please contact Roger Melling on 020 8449 2283.

We will be supporting Christian Aid Week, which begins on Sunday 10 May. Gail, our Christian Aid rep, explains that Christian Aid were hoping to focus on providing fresh water for communities in Kenya this year, but have dramatically refocussed their fundraising efforts in order to limit the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic in the poorest communities, globally. They are now raising funds to provide soap and clean water in those poverty-striken countries where they already have representatives and partners. You read can more about their Coronavirus emergency appeal, see what the last edition of the Herald said about Christian Aid week, and contribute to St Mary’s fundraising for Christian Aid on our new Justgiving page. Please share this opportunity to give with your friends outside the congregation. Thank you.

Prayers and intercessions

Margaret has produced a list of people and places to pray for each week. If you would like us to pray for anyone, or can offer an update on the needs of anyone on the prayer list please contact the parish office

And finally …

Fraudsters are still operating, and target those who are vulnerable and frightened during the Covid-19 outbreak. Read about how to stay safe.

In response to our survey on church communication, some people requested that the font size of emails be increased. Chris Yates has kindly provided some advice about changing your computer settings to increase font size, and improve online accessibility.

Keeping in touch

You can follow us on twitter, find us on facebook, or visit the parish website.

You can find hard copies of this email, other resources, and the Herald, in distribution boxes at the lych gate and the old parish hall.

Please continue to pray for each other, all those affected by the Covid-19 outbreak, people working in the NHS, emergency and social services, and all those on whom we rely for our daily needs.
